Aldersgate United Methodist Church to celebrate 50th year
Aldersgate United Methodist Church will celebrate its 50th anniversary the weekend of April 20th with an open house and worship service.
The church, at 1500 East Rio Rd., will kick off the open house Saturday, April 20th at 1:00 by opening the church time capsule. Guests are invited to enjoy a pictorial history of AUMC. To close the day, guests are invited to a hymn and chorus sing featuring traditional and contemporary music. On Sunday, April 21st, there will be a combined traditional and contemporary worship service with a sermon by guest minister, Rev. Amos Rideout, Jr., minister of Aldersgate from 1975-1987.
Planning for the church began in 1962 as the result of a growing interest for a Methodist church north of the 250 by-pass. The first AUMC service was held in January 1963 at Greenbrier Elementary School. Later that year, the church purchased the property located on Rio Road. Construction of the church was completed in December 1964. To accommodate the growing congregation, the church added an addition which included a new sanctuary in 2007.
