The Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra, North America’s premier Russian folk orchestra, will be appearing in concert under the baton of Svetlana Nikonova [ svet-LAHH-nuh knee-con-OH-vuhh ] at Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Dickinson Proscenium Theater on Sunday September 30 at 3 p.m. The Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra is a community-based ensemble dedicated to studying, preserving and performing the rich musical heritage of Russia and Eastern Europeon authentic traditional folk instruments. Their music brings alive the sounds of folk orchestras traditionally found in major cities and towns of Russia, and will feature virtuoso instrumental and vocal soloists. Maestro Nikonova and other orchestra members are graduates of the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the orchestra’s soloists have performed with world renowned orchestras here and in Europe.
